Bill Johnson, Director
Magic Meathands director, Bill Johnson has studied improvisation with some of the nation’s top
instructors including Gary Austin (original director of The Groundlings), Stan Wells (Founder, Empty
Stage Comedy Theatre), and Bill Steinkellner (Emmy award winning producer of Cheers and creator
of “Insta-Play” long form improv). During his 13 years teaching, directing and performing
improvisation, Bill has had the pleasure of performing with a number of performing companies
including The Waterbrains and guest appearing with LA’s The Transformers.
Bill received formal training at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia where he earned a
Bachelor’s degree in Media Arts and Theatre. His stage directing credits include productions of
Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, Shirley Lauro’s A Piece of my Heart, Lee Blessing’s
Eleemosynary, and Ancient History by David Ives.
With 15 years experience in the theatre, Bill Johnson looks to combine traditional theatre training with
the exploration of the modern improvisational theatre to bring a fresh approach to the training and
presentation of comedy improv; one that a new millenium audience can enjoy and opens its doors to
anyone interested in exploring the creative performer within themselves.
